State of the spill

Posted By on Thu, Jul 24, 2008 at 5:08 PM

As cleanup continues on the oil spill at the mouth of the river, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality continues to monitor the situation and issue releases.

The DEQ says that (despite the smell), hydrocarbon air readings are low in the areas around the river...

How much was spilled? The DEQ estimates it at "9980 barrels." CNN translates that to 420,000 gallons...

WWL-TV reports that St. Bernard Parish has reopened its water system intake...

And we've got a call in to the DEQ to see if we can get an initial assessment of what this means for the wildlife and fish along the 97 miles of the Mississippi River that are now closed to ship traffic.
