What's up with Ted Nugent?

I’d say I don’t know what’s up with Ted Nugent these days, but what  I really mean is that I have no idea what’s really up with Ted Nugent these days.

In the last week, I have been notified that Ted Nugent 1) has got a new book out (the news) 2) is reaching out to Sarah Palin by giving her a copy of his new book, 3) that he’s celebrating National Hunting and Fishing Day on Saturday (and did you know he has a book out?), and this is where it gets weird … 4) he’s offering to provide personal security to Sir Paul McCartney from unnamed “Muslim extremists” if the former member of Wings plays in a concert celebrating Israel’s 60th birthday. And Ted will buy him a "nice dinner of tofu."

Nugent apparently describes himself as “Dirty Harry with a ponytail.”

At the very least, the Nuge has a new PR team. In fact, the same team that promotes the Voodoo Music Fest. (No word on whether he’ll be booked for that event.)

The artist behind the timeless classic “Cat Scratch Fever” is plenty busy, and especially in this political season. He sits on the board of the NRA. And apparently he has a “Manifesto” out on how to “fix America” (Ted, White and Blue).

Among the laws and regulations that he would like to see changed are opportunities to hunt bears in New Jersey and cougars in California.

It may not come as a surprise that Ted’s book is published by Regnery Publishing, the group that enabled the Swift Boating of John Kerry with the book Unfit for Command. It also is the publisher for Jerome Corsi’s attack on Barack Obama. Other authors from Regnery include a litany of GOP politicians (Newt Gingrich, Dennis Hastert, Haley Barbour), pundits (William Bennett), hacks (Ann Coulter, David Horowitz), celebrities (Chuck Norris, author of Black Belt Patriotism; actually, he’s the only other celeb besides Ted) and felons (G. Gordon Liddy, Oliver North).

(It could be noted that Ted once explained that he dodged service in Vietnam by making himself appear unfit to serve. Many years later he recanted that story and said that he actually had a college deferment. He also said he joined a USO tour to Iraq in 2004 to make up for the deferment.)

In his letter to Palin, accompanying her free copy, Ted said, “We who live our American Dream by God, truth, logic, goodwill and decency, thank you for bringing such defiant common sense and self-evident truth back to the GOP and politics.”
