A few weeks ago I speculated with friends about what to do the next week.  Women & Wine Wednesday was approaching as was Gambit's Red Whites & Blues wine tasting event.  There  were also tastings at SWIRL and W.I.N.O. that I would sadly miss.  A girlfriend exclaimed, "You just got to New Orleans! How do you know about all of these things?"

The answer is two-fold and simple.  For starters, ask around and secondly, harness the power of the web!  Among passionate political emails from my mother, spam from my Aunt Patty and notices of bills due I also receive daily notices about what wine related events are going on around town.

So if you really want to get involved in wine and you are not sure where to start or where to go, here are just a few ideas of where to look.

Swirl is located at 3143 Ponce de Leon St. near the Fairgrounds.  It is a great looking shop with fantastic selection of wines - but the best part is how active they are!  Sign up for their email list and you will be treated to a weekly essay highlighting a variety of pending events.  This week you can look forward to Tapas Tuesday, their Howlin' Halloween Canine Costume Fest on Thursday, and their Friday free-for-all costume party.  Their email also lists the wines they have on sale and new wines and beers they are stocking.  Take a look at an archived email here

Localwineevents.com   is a website that lists all upcoming wine events to which they are alerted.  This week's announcement featured the Vive Le Beaujolais tasting on Oct 30, 2008 (Thu) @ 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM at Martin Wine Cellar in Metairie.

W.I.N.O. ,which stands for Wine Institute of New Orleans, is a serve yourself tasting room / retail shop / wine mecca located at 610 Tchoupitoulas St. in the CBD.  They feature 80 wines on "tap" - perfect for people with commitment issues.  It is also a great place to meet for drinks, pick up a gift wine or begin or expand your knowledge of wine.  I also recommend their debit cards as great holiday gifts. (hint, hint)

Martin Wine Cellar now has locations in Baton Rouge, Mandeville, New Orleans, Metairie and www.martinwine.com.   According to their website, they will be also be reopening their Baronne St. location in 2010.  In the meantime they offer several tasting events among their various locations.  One quick sample can be found here otherwise, sign up for their email list.

Cork & Bottle   Cork & Bottle is a wine and cheese shop located at 3700 Orleans Avenue in the American Can Company.  Their website lists a host of events including seriously special winemakers (including Doug Shafer from Shafer Vineyards in Napa Valley coming Wednesday Nov. 12th.  I knew Doug Shafer and his wines in my former corporate life and trust me, his wines are some of the best in Napa Valley.  This is worth attending).  Cork & Bottle's website also hints at their soon-to-open CLEVER - a wine bar next door to their existing retail space.  As of this morning, they are hoping to be open and pouring wine and beer by Friday.

And lastly, if you really want to meet people and get involved - join the New Orleans Wine Meet Up group here.

To borrow a phrase from Time Out NY:  Welcome to New Orleans, Now Get Out!
