As a big, huge, mega fan of the AMC series "Mad Men", I did a serious double take while walking onto the court during last night's Hornets game and saw none other than Salvatore Romano (a.k.a Bryan Batt) waiting for his cue to sing the national anthem (truth be told, I had to go back into the media room and check out the Mad Men Web site and his IMDb page to make sure I wasn't seeing things, but that's neither here nor there).

Much to my delight, Batt was incredibly nice when I approached him and was kind enough to talk to me for a moment before he sang. It turns out that the New Orleans-born Batt is in town, albeit briefly, to shoot a small role in a Judd Apatow movie that being filmed in the city. Here are some footnotes:

  •  On working on "Mad Men": Batt had nothing but great things to say about working on the show and almost sounded like a fan himself. "Everyone is so nice, and the show is just so smart and creative," he said. Unfortunately, they aren't even going to start shooting the next season until March.
  • The last time Batt sung the National Anthem, it was in the early nineties at Yankee Stadium the day after the Tony Awards. Batt wasn't particular fond of that moment, but that's mostly because he was still recovering from the awards' show party the night before. (Anyone who saw him sing last night knows that wasn't the case this time).
  • In the interest of Gambit's push to shop local, I have to mention Batt's store Hazelnut on Magazine Street. Remember, all, shop local.
