Dog Day Afternoon

Today brought perfect weather for the 17th annual Mystic Krewe of Barkus parade in the French Quarter. Every year it just gets bigger -- this procession took almost two hours to pass at N. Rampart and St. Ann. I saw everything from infinitesimal Yorkies and Poms and Chihuahuas to not-so-infinitesimal Great Danes (including Harley, the 135-lb. Dane that spent much of the parade watching from the sidewalk leaning on my leg). Also in the parade was Gambit sports reporter Alejandro de los Rios and his mutt (Alejandro will be posting better pics and maybe even a video tomorrow).

Not a single dogfight in my vicinity, and the few poop accidents were quickly scooped up by parade volunteers who marched with blue plastic bags. Since this year's parade was Bat-Mutt: The Bark Knight, there were lots of canine Jokers, Riddlers, and a few dogs riding in hand-pulled Batmobiles.

But the biggest cheers came for the volunteers with groups like Animal Rescue New Orleans and Best Friends Animal Society, many of whom marched with dogs wearing jackets that said "ADOPT ME." Also a big hit was this rolling White House, which accompanied a coterie that included "Bark Obama," "Joe Bite-Em," "Secretary of Steak," and a whole canine cabinet:

As usual, the cats in the French Quarter knew whose day it was and found something else to do for the afternoon; I didn't see a single one.
