Cohen Brothers

Posted By on Thu, Apr 2, 2009 at 11:03 PM

In Borat, British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen made an art of edgy and offensive humor -- partially because the supposed Kazakhastani reporter and cultural ambassador he played feigned ignorance of or flaunted all taboo and etiquette, and partially because his victims often found comfort or camaraderie in the crassness or bigotry Borat professed. It's a schtick similar to Stephen Colbert out O'Reillying Bill O'Reilly (But everyone knows Colbert's premise; Cohen never winks at the camera). But one of the more amazing feats was that Cohen was able to get away with the ruse. He had played Borat as well as similarly outrageous British rapper Ali G and Austrian fashion expert Bruno on TV in the UK and later for HBO audiences in the U.S. (Get it in your Netflix queue -- watching the grammatically challenged Ali G snooker right wing blowhard Pat Buchanan into continually referring to "WMDs" as "BLTs" is priceless and bizarre. He also messed with Noam Chomsky, Gore Vidal, Newt Gingrich, Andy Rooney and Victoria Beckham among many others.) Some of the people Borat duped on film sued him(and here and here). Cohen also went on to star in more films (Talladega Nights, Sweeney Todd). And now Bruno is set for release. It initially received an NC-17 rating, like Borat. And again, it's amazing that many people never saw him coming.
