Bicycle Festival in Abita Springs Saturday

Abita Springs is a great stop for bicyclists riding the Tammany Trace, with its shady rest area, casual restaurants and Abita Brew Pub. But tomorrow, June 20, the little Northshore village will be the hub for cycling fanatics and hobbyists around the area gathering for the Louisiana Bicycle Festival.

The festival has been held on Father's Day since 2000, but this year the schedule has been changed to the Saturday before the holiday.

The festival is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes a bicycle parade, a bicycle garage sale, live bands, food and bike competitions in categories including art bikes and restored bikes.

One of the prime movers of the festival is John Preble, the Abita Springs artist and curator of the indispensably eccentric UCM Museum, an emporium of the odd in the heart of the village. Naturally, there is a fair bit of zaniness involved, like the jet powered bicycle from the 2007 fest.

Enthusiasts will exhibit and pedal around on their homebuilt, vintage and custom bicycles, and anyone with any type of bicycle is welcome to participate, whether you have a brand new mountain bike or something dusted off from grandpa's garage.

Details are here.
