    Today, 100 college students from around the country gathered in New Orleans to kick-off a two-day volunteer trip (Project "Make [responsibility] Count") with HandsOn New Orleans and PricewaterhouseCoopers. Projects include home rebuilding in the Lower 9th Ward, green space restoration in George Washington Carver Park, improvements at Warren Easton High School, and street improvement projects on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard.
  • The Louisiana Department of Transportation announced it will extend its LA Swift program through June 2010. The program offers a ride from New Orleans to Baton Rouge for only $5 one way and is offered seven days a week.
  • Publisher Larry Savoie has introduced a new, free monthly magazine on all things green and sustainable. Louisiana Green Scene also is printed on recycled paper and uses soy-based ink. Pick up the June issue (with Neil Young on the cover) at coffee shops and restaurants around town. Look for the July issue next month.
  • This week, the Louisiana House and Senate passed House bills 858 and 733 and Senate bill 224. HB 858 allows for a 50 percent solar tax credit for solar installers, while 733 provides a tax cut for green job employers. SB 224 Senate bill 224 allows municipalities to set up a means of financing commercial or residential renewable energy or efficiency projects.
