Coming up in this week's Gambit

Posted By on Sun, Feb 13, 2011 at 11:10 AM

In this week's Gambit:

• In December, Time magazine's Josh Ozersky said New Orleans food was better than ever — partially because, it seems, our restaurants are cooking like other places in the United States. In the last year, the city has adopted national trends including food trucks, farm-to-table, "designer cupcakes" and bacon everything. Meanwhile, some locals worry what it means for local cuisine and traditions when a James Beard-award winning food writer praises New Orleans by saying "the food there would be at home in New York City, Portland, Ore., or San Francisco." Ian McNulty talked to dozens of restaurateurs, chefs and food experts, asking them: As New Orleans begins to cook like much of the rest of the country, is our culinary heritage at risk?

• As Renee Gill Pratt's trial continues, Clancy DuBos reflects on the Jefferson family's way of doing business in New Orleans, and wonders if Bill Jefferson was our Tony Soprano ...

• In "The 600," Alex Woodward talks to DA Leon Cannizzaro about his challenge to Criminal District Court judges to more than double the number of jury trials they hold. The judges are keeping mum, but the public defenders' office isn't, saying their already-overloaded caseload makes that goal unrealistic ...

Will Coviello previews the 25th anniversary of Krewe du Vieux, which rolls (and stumbles and crawls) this Saturday night with king Don Marshall and the theme "25 Years Wasted" ...

• Noah Bonaparte Pais talks to Broken Social Scene about their upcoming gig at Tip's ...

Dalt Wonk raves about Cat's-Paw at the AllWays Lounge ...

• and it's the Mardi Gras issue of our monthly home and fashion magazine, CUE. Editor Missy Wilkinson will be on tomorrow's WWL Eyewitness Morning News to talk Carnival fashion.

See you on the newsstand — or out at Krewe du Vieux this Saturday.
