The Krewe du Vieux sent its goons around to French Quarter businesses last week, offering a sort of protection scam. The organization's representatives suggested that unless some cash fell out of the register there might be a sudden change in the parade route. It was an all-in-good-fun effort to raise funds for the New Orleans Musician's Clinic.
Since its inception, the satirical parade has always had a full lineup of brass bands in the parade. (See Gambit's preview of the 2011 parade here.) Krewe organizers wanted to throw some muscle around to support a good cause. But if you were not shaken down on Friday, don't worry. The parade organizers would be happy to work a scam on you Saturday. The procession begins at 6:30 p.m., but in advance of the parade, there will be representatives selling 3-D glasses, which of course you need, or don't need, to appreciate the parade. The glasses will alter your view of the parade, though not necessarily for the better. The krewe provided the glasses to the Musician's Clinic, and proceeds from their sale go to support the clinic. (Full disclosure: I am a member of the krewe.)
