Grammys cut zydeco and Cajun category

Posted By on Wed, Apr 6, 2011 at 2:57 PM

Feufollet and the Pine Leaf Boys will now have to compete against Hawaiian and Native American recording artists. The Recording Academy announced today a "restructuring" of its Grammy awards categories, which slashed the number of categories from 109 to 78 and "consolidates" them into others.

Those new categories effectively lump now-former Best Hawaiian Music Album, Best Native American Music Album and the few-years-old (created only in 2008) Best Zydeco or Cajun Music Album into a new "Best Regional Roots Music Album" category. (Other categories under the American Roots Music Field, like contemporary and traditional blues and folk categories, now vie for a single Best Blues or Best Folk album category.)

The new categories are in place for the 54th annual ceremony. (Find the full list breakdown here.)

Now the battle wages thusly: ukuleles versus accordions. Chubby Carrier, engage.
