Review: Bellflower

Posted By on Fri, Sep 23, 2011 at 5:03 PM

Bellflower is a highly stylized and gritty portrait of a group of hipsters' slow-motion self-inflicted implosion. Woodrow (Evan Glodell) and Aiden (Tyler Dawson) move to Southern California to be near the ocean, guzzle booze and outfit themselves for post-apocalyptic survival. They build a flame thrower and enhance a muscle car for Mad Max style looks and effects. Woodrow falls for a brassy girl named Milly (Jessie Wiseman), but he can't really keep up with her and their relationship is as combustible as the rest of their activities. They all live their lives on with a certain willful and romantic abandon, and anyone easily put off by hipster narcissism probably won't like much of this film. I found it dark and riveting. There's a slightly longer review here (coupled with the Ryan Gosling film Drive). The New Orleans Film Society and Chalmette Movies present two screenings of Bellflower (7:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday).
