Hurray for the Riff Raff

I'm spreading out a buttload of music over two days, so, without further ado, here are some of my picks from this weekend's lineup at the 2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. If you missed out last week, catch up here. You can catch all our Jazz Fest preview coverage here.

Thursday, May 3:

Folk outfit Hurray for the Riff Raff (11:30 a.m., Acura Stage) recently released its latest LP, Look Out Mama. Read about the album in Gambit. Download the band's take on George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" here, stream album tracks here, and check out a 2009 Daytrotter session — a far cry from an Acura Stage debut. The band broke some hearts and turned heads at its Lagniappe Stage Jazz Fest debut last year. You can also catch the band at the Marigny Theater (at AllWays Lounge) on Saturday night.

More after the jump.

Pop and R&B upcomer Kourtney Heart (11:20 a.m., Congo Square Stage) blew up in 2010 with the bounce-pop smash "My Boy." Watch the video for "Runaway" from her latest, A Gemini's Diary, below. Download the album mixtape here. (Read Lauren LaBorde's profile of the singer in Gambit.)

Funk and soul-inspired singer-songwriter Mia Borders (12:35 p.m., Gentilly Stage) released Wherever There Is this year. Grab tracks on her website.

Big Easy Award-winning "bayou Americana" roots-rockers Honey Island Swamp Band (2:25 p.m., Acura Stage) released Good To You in 2010. Stream tracks here. The band also performs a late show tonight (1 a.m.) at Blue Nile.

Chile's Chico Trujillo (4:20 p.m., Jazz & Heritage Stage) is a cumbia music legend, a Pan-Latin party band adding coastal African twang, punk rock and percussive Latin dance. Listen to a ton of the band's discography here.

Grammy Award winner Esperanza Spalding (5:25 p.m., Congo Square Stage), who blew minds at her Jazz Tent debut in 2010, returns to the Fest this year on the heels of her latest album, Radio Music Society. Watch Spalding — an acrobatic jazz vocalist, bassist and multi-instrumentalist — in the video for "Radio Song" below. Read more about the artist in Gambit.

Watch Florence + The Machine's (5:30 p.m., Gentilly Stage) brass-backed, bayou pop spin on Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" here. Here's her latest track, "Never Let Me Go," from Ceremonials — grab the Clams Casino remix here. (Read Lauren LaBorde's interview with Welch from her 2010 appearance at the Voodoo Experience.)

Tonight, after the Fest:

Gal Holiday & the Honky Tonk Revue is at Circle Bar at 9 p.m. Download the Western swing ensemble's tracks here.

A trio of surf-punk bands takes the stage at Dragon's Den at 9 p.m. — get in the mood with WTUL Storm Surge of Reverb surf and instrumental rock 'n' roll host Hunter King's free mixtape for the Constance blog.

Friday, May 4:

Theresa Andersson (12:40 p.m., Gentilly Stage) returns to Jazz Fest this year with a full band performance. Download "What Comes Next" from her latest album Street Parade (read about it in Gambit).

Grab Lafayette Cajun folk band Feufollet's (12:25 p.m., Fais Do Do Stage) "Au Fond du Lac" from the 2010 album En Couleurs here.

Gathering of the Juggalos veteran Mystikal (3:55 p.m., Congo Square Stage) is headed back to prison — but not before his Jazz Fest performance. Watch a behind-the-scenes preview of his video with Galactic for Carnivale Electricos track "Move Fast" with Mannie Fresh:

Download Lafayette power-pop band Brass Bed (5:45 p.m., Lagniappe Stage) cover of Harry Nilsson's "One" here, from the band's 2012 EP of Nilsson covers with artist Allison Bohl. Here's a video for "Don't Forget Me":

... and after:

Brass Bed performs an encore with Big Rock Candy Mountain and Au Ras Au Ras at Siberia at 10 p.m. Grab Big Rock's riff-heavy, space-age guitar-pop EP here. Au Ras Au Ras is familiar face Tess Brunet's solo soul-pop outfit — stream her LP here.
