Today the New Orleans City Council was set to vote on a new ordinance that would require vendors at second line parades to have permits, prohibit them from selling alcohol, and other new requirements and restrictions to this 100-plus year-old tradition.

However, Councilwoman Diana Bajoie deferred the issue until the next council meeting to make additional technical amendments to the ordinance. Bajoie, who said she’s “happy to be able to sponsor this ordinance” that was originally drafted by Landrieu’s administration, wants to amend the ordinance to take into consideration the people selling cold drinks out of rolling coolers and carrying baskets of “plah-rinz”...’so they don’t have to run hiding the plah-rinz when the police come.’

Bajoie also assured the public that many vendors have approached her saying they want an opportunity to be “legitimate” and that this ordinance and permitting system will give them that opportunity.

Stay tuned for more developments...
