Another familiar name from the ranks of casual Baton Rouge dining has arrived in the New Orleans area. Albasha Greek & Lebanese Restaurant opened its latest location in Metairie, setting up shop in the Pontchartrain Place Shopping Center not far from the Lakeside Shopping Center.
Albasha now has eight locations, with most in the Baton Rouge area. Its inexpensive menu has standards from the gyro/shawarma/falafel canon, along with a few more specifically Greek dishes.
There’s mousaka (made either with eggplant or squash) and a lamb shank plate, and platters are rounded out by green salads sluiced with a creamy feta cheese dressing. The “meat stuffed plate” starts with stuffed grape leaves but moves on to stuffed cabbage, stuffed squash and stuffed bell peppers. The Albasha menu also has more seafood than most local Middle Eastern restaurants, with shrimp scampi, broiled redfish and shrimp kabobs finished off with hummus and rice pilaf. Meanwhile, meze platters provide giant samplings of the menu highlights served for two or three people.
This new Metairie location has a pair of large dining rooms and while there is a bar built into one of them the restaurant is BYOB. Albasha serves lunch and dinner daily.
