Out now: Truth Universal's Invent the Future

Posted By on Tue, Oct 8, 2013 at 11:00 AM

New Orleans MC Truth Universal officially drops his latest album, Invent the Future, today after a weekend celebration and album release for the record, which rounds up an all-star production team to boost Truth's provocative, community-conscious mind-bending and storytelling raps.

Influenced equally by b-boy culture, Public Enemy politics, golden-era hip-hop as well as political revolutionaries, the environment and community organizing, Truth packs Invent the Future with wall-to-wall calls-to-action, promising to "put New Orleans on the map like Rand McNally" in more ways than one. The album follows 2011's Resistance Vol. 2: Polygraph and 2010's Guerrilla Business.

"The thing most people see is commercial rap. It’s just a bunch of nonsense," Truth told Gambit last month. "It’s important people who understand what’s going on to put that in the music. Me, personally, I feel responsible. If I can lend any discussion that will help the community, I need to add that on, or help start a discussion. People like to say they try to have solutions, but I can’t say I have. I’m an organizer, an activist, at heart. I’m going to try to start the discussions so we can work on solutions. It’s important we keep that alive in hip hop."

"Police corruption, the housing situation, gentrification, the lack of access to fresh foods — it’s wide open for all that," he said about his lyrics. "I turn it up when I can."
