Two autumn-inspired beer pairing dinners

Next week, two local restaurants are presenting two very different beer pairing dinners. On Thursday, Dat Dog (3336 Magazine St., 504-324-2226) will be hosting a dinner focusing on seasonal autumn beer and on Friday, Emeril’s Delmonico (1300 St. Charles Ave., 504-525-4937) is teaming up with NOLA Brewing to showcase NOLA’s regular and tap room exclusive beers.

The Dat Dog dinner will have five courses. The first will pair Brooklyn Brewing’s Oktoberfest with a traditional brat cooked in the same beer; the second course will pair the popular Guinness Beer Brat with andouille with Magic Hat’s Séance saison; the third course is Newcastle Werewolf paired with their “Bacon Werewolf,” which is a Slovenian sausage topped with bacon and sauerkraut; followed by another Oktoberfest style beer from Harpoon paired with a duck sausage with bacon and blackberry preserves; and finishing with New Belgium Pumpkick spiced ale paired with vegetarian apple sage sausage topped with butternut squash puree and an apple slice.

“We just picked our favorites and went from there,” says Dat Dog’s bar manager Christopher Johnson, adding he was inspired by a tasting of a variety of fall seasonal beers arranged by Crescent Crown Distribution. “Having lived in the Northeast and occasionally missing a proper fall, I tried to bring a hint of that to the menu.”

NOLA Brewing and Delmonico paired up last year for a sold-out beer dinner, so when chef de cuisine Anthony Scanio and his team were looking for inspiration this year, they went to NOLA’s newly opened brewery tap room. They tasted all the beer styles on tap, then developed the menu around NOLA’s regular beer lineup and tap room exclusives while “exploring more rustic Southern Louisiana cuisine that pairs beautifully with beer,” Scanio says.

One of the NOLA experimental beers brewed only for customers of the brewery’s tap room, the popular Mango-Pineapple Saison, will be served with hors d’oeuvres. The bitterness of Hopitoulas IPA compliments the rich and spicy notes of the almond-crusted speckled trout with sauce piquante; and the braising liquid of the beef cheek crepinette and the accompanying beer will be NOLA’s flagship Brown Ale. NOLA Brewing’s special collaboration beer with New Belgium, a Belgian single ale brewed with local muscadine grapes called Swamp Grape Escape, will be served with the dessert course, a gateau de sirop which will include a sabayon made with a NOLA tap room exclusive beer, a rum barrel saison.

The Dat Dog Fall Seasonal beer dinner is at 7:00 p.m. on Thu., Oct. 24, and will cost $35 and include musical entertainment. On Fri., Oct. 25, the Delmonico reception starts at 7:00 p.m. and the dinner starts at 7:30 p.m., at a cost of $70 (excluding tax and gratuity).
