FARE, a new health food shop, opening Uptown

Posted By on Tue, Feb 18, 2014 at 12:00 PM

Good news for those trying to get a jump on their post-Mardi Gras health kick: FARE, a new "food apothecary" focusing on wholesome food products, will be opening at 4838 Magazine St. (on the corner of Lyons St.) Uptown later this week.

According to owner Alicia Murphy (who also just happens to be married to Irish House head chef Matt Murphy), "I am all about promoting clean eating. FARE is a place where you can get prepared takeaway foods, and everything from juice to smoothies coffee tea, muffins, cupcakes, chocolates, dried veggies and more. In the next few weeks we'll be incorporating salads, soups, entrees and takeaway meals as well.

"The whole premise is that we'll be focusing on foods that are dairy-free, soy free and gluten free, what's known as an 'anti-inflammatory diet,'" continued Murphy. There are so many products in a lot of other places that claim to be 'gluten-free,' but once you start reading the ingredients, there are so many unhealthy additives, preservatives and chemicals in there." (For more on vegan and gluten-free diets, check out Gambit's recent interview with Jehan Strouse of 3 Potato 4.)

For Murphy, the idea of moving toward a more healthful diet doesn't necessarily mean giving up all the food you love. "I'm in the food business," she says, "and I never want to be about depriving myself of my family great things to eat. So when my children say to me, 'Mom, I want a PB&J, I make the bread, I give them a different nut butter and jam. If they say, 'Mom, I'm going to a birthday party and I want to have cupcakes like the other kids,' I find some really great cupcakes for my children to bring. I want to be able to give my kids all the great food, but it should be healthy food."

FARE, which also goes by the slogan "food for health," will begin with smaller items, and plans to eventually expand into freshly prepared whole meals ready for take-out. Said Murphy, "It'll be so great when a Mom on the run like me can pop in and buy an entire meal at one place, and not get stuck eating something tasteless or unhealthy. This is going to be food that is good for you, and also tastes really good — just because it's healthy, it doesn't mean it has to taste bad. We have some really killer chocolate chip cookies!"

Located at 4838 Magazine St., FARE plans to open later this week, at the earliest (Murphy admits that the final stages of opening are a "day-by-day" affair). They can be reached at (504) 302-9171.
