New Orleans metal supergroup Down — fronted by Phil Anselmo with guitarists Pepper Keenan and Bobby Landgraf, drummer Jimmy Bower and bassist Pat Bruders — will release the EP Down IV - Part Two on May 13. The band debuted the track "We Knew Him Well" on Stereogum — listen to it here.
The EP follows 2012's Down IV Part One - The Purple EP, the most recent installments of the band's numerical releases, including 2002's Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow and 2007's Down III: Over the Under, which followed the landmark 1995 debut NOLA. The pounding four-minute single "We Knew Him Well" has Down's signature down-tuned warped-groove black-swamp riffs and Anselmo's bluesy bark.
The band's upcoming tour (with dates in New Orleans notably missing) features Black Label Society and Devil You Know.
Louisiana's sludgelords Eyehategod, meanwhile, will release their first studio album in 13 years on May 27. Last week, the band premiered a new track "Agitation! Propaganda!" which begins as a circle-pitting blast and winds into a chugging riff monster — listen to it here. The band has endured several tragedies over the last decade, from vocalist Mike IX Williams' arrest to the recent death of drummer Joey LaCaze, whose final tracks made it into the new album. (Missing Monuments drummer Aaron Hill joined the band last year.)
The album was finished at Anselmo's Housecore Records recording studio at his Louisiana home. In a 2013 interview with Gambit, Anselmo praised the album: "They just did an incredible record that I’m so proud of. It’s a great album."
