Learn to play the sport that looks like summer

Posted By on Mon, Jun 9, 2014 at 4:01 PM

Beach volleyball is easy to admire from afar: the short shorts, the Saved by the Bell aesthetic of it all, the tan and smiling faces performing airy feats of agility. Playing it, I imagine, is a whole other experience, and an intimidating one if you've only just sort of seen it.

This Saturday, White Sands Volleyball Courts invites both experienced beach volleyball players and the sport's timid onlookers alike to a grand opening ribbon-cutting to unveil four new courts at its Metairie facility. The party kicks off at 7 p.m., and there are drinks right next door at the Bottomline Beach Club.

All this week there's a free beach volleyball clinic to players of every level, starting at 7 p.m. each evening, and registration is open for White Sands' summer league if you and your friends want to take it to the next level with a team.

Before Saturday's party, says White Sands Owner Bruce White, the advanced level players will square off for a bid to the beach volleyball World Championships in Long Beach, California, and intermediate and beginning players will vie for sunglasses and other giveaways. Stop by to play or just to watch.
