District Hand Pie & Coffee Bar now open on Magazine St.

Posted By on Mon, Dec 22, 2014 at 9:29 AM

The corner of Nashville and Magazine became a bonafide pie lover's dream on Friday with the arrival of District Hand Pie & Coffee Bar to the already sweet stretch of street.

Located in the diminutive former home of Velvet Espresso (5637 Magazine St), District Hand Pie is the second savory-meets-sweet coffee spot from Donuts.Sliders.Brew founder Chris Audler. The shop features an impressive array of savory and sweet hand pies, craft coffee drinks and one-off creations like monkey bread twists and (seasonally appropriate) spiced cider.

The lovingly crafted, rotating menu of hand pies — roughly the size of an envelope and generously packed with filling — have an impressive amount of detail in each small package. The cherry basil hand pie is herbal and rich, with a glossy, decorative cherry adorning the top like an edible holiday ornament. The kung pao chicken pie is black sesame-speckled, dressed with a spicy, tangy slaw and filling enough to serve as a light lunch.

The "craft coffee bar" is equally inventive, and will particularly appeal to adventurous coffee drinkers. Order up a "Cafe Caviar" and be prepared for a molecular gastronomy-like float of coffee caviar on a sea of chicory-infused milk. The "Horchado" blends a traditional cortado (espresso cut with warm milk) with creamy horchata made in-house.

District Hand Pie is open daily, 6 a.m. - 6 p.m. For more information, follow along via its Twitter.
