Theodore "Bo" Dollis, longtime big chief of the Wild Magnolias Mardi Gras Indians, died Jan. 20. His family has announced details for the funeral and visitation. There is a public visitation from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 at the Carver Theater (2101 Orleans Ave.) and from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 at Xavier University's Louisiana Convocation Center (7900 Stroelitz St.). The funeral service follows at 10 a.m. Saturday at Xavier. After the service, there is a procession to Providence Park Cemetery (8200 Airline Drive).

There also is a musical tribute at 8 p.m. Friday at the Carver Theater. Admission is $15.

“My husband was a decent and humble man who enjoyed sharing his experiences with everyone around him,” said Laurita “Queen Rita” Dollis in a statement released to press. “Bo would have truly appreciated how the community has come together to remember him, and I can’t thank everyone enough for the kind words and works that they have given in preparation for these services. It will be a great day of celebration and mourning.”

Dollis served as big chief of the Wild Magnolias beginning in 1964. The group released several songs and albums in the mid-1970s that gained wider attention for Indian music and culture. Dollis received a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2011.

The New Orleans City Council proclaimed April 24 Bo Dollis Day for his contributions to the city's music and  culture.
