The krewe of ’tit Rǝx holds its shoebox float parade at 5 p.m. Saturday in Fauborg Marigny. There 29 shoebox-floats reflecting this year’s theme, “L’Enfant Terrible,” which literally translates to terrible child.

“[It is] somebody that bucks authority, [who] is unorthodox,” says krewe treasurer Janine Hayes. “The alternate meaning is a young artist that bucks authority and starts young and does crazy work. It’s generally  — for our parade — somebody that is a young person that is bucking authority and is an unorthodox figure. So you’ll see a lot of parade interpretations of that either in a child figure or an artist.”

The krewe combines the traditions of Mardi Gras parades with the local elementary school custom of having students make their own shoebox floats during Carnival. The parade follows a 14-block route from St. Roch Avenue to the Allways Lounge. Along the way, krewe members distribute handmade miniature throws, including tiny beads, doubloons, throw bags and flambeaux sticks.

“As the parade has evolved and gotten better artistically, people have started making throws that kind of go along with their floats,” Hayes says. “In my instance, I made a float this year and my throws are miniature floats. People make mini king cakes, either edible or non-edible. … We call them throws but we don’t actually throw them. They’re so small that we usually place them in your hand. It’s very intimate.”

The parade rolls with a king and queen float instead of an actual king and queen. This year the royal float honors late krewe member Veronica Russell, who made the title float in 2012.

The parade also features four bands including Egg Yolk Jubilee, Panorama Brass Band and Slow Danger. The procession ends at the Allways Lounge, where the Ping Pong Ball begins at 8 p.m. and DJ Lefty Parker performs.
