Mardi Gras Indians St. Joseph's Night Celebration

Thursday March 19, 2015 Sunset (approximately 7:10 p.m.) - until

Today is St. Joseph’s Day, a very important holiday in New Orleans where people across the city, Catholics and non-Catholics, celebrate traditions that include eating, touring large magnificent altars in churches around the city, and chasing our beautiful, ever-elusive Mardi Gras Indians around neighborhoods in both the Uptown and Downtown areas.

St. Joseph's Night is a surreal magical time in New Orleans when people flock to one of several neighborhoods to ‘oooh’ and ‘aaah’ and take pictures of our ‘pretty’ Indians. Like giant colorful birds, our illustrious Indians showcase their beautiful suits from this year’s Mardi Gras day while walking, singing and mock-battling one another under the moonlight.

Starting around sunset, Indians generally gather around the following areas:

(details below the jump):

A.L. Davis Park at Washington Avenue and LaSalle Street

2nd and Dryades Streets

Under the Claiborne Bridge

St. Claude around Marais

St. Bernard Avenue between Claiborne and Rampart

St. Claude Avenue in the Lower Ninth Ward

Indians stay on the move so if you’re on the hunt for them, watch for the tell-tale signs of large crowds and blue police lights.

Also, the Guardians of the Flame and the Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame are hosting a St. Joseph's Day Open House this evening from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room at Blue Plate Artists Lofts (1315 S. Jefferson Davis Parkway). For more info contact Queen Cherice Harrison Nelson: 504-214-6630 or
