Newly opened food hall St. Roch Market was badly vandalized early Friday morning.

Pink paint splatters covered the brick and wood facade of the St. Claude Avenue hotspot and several windows were shattered or badly cracked.

The vandals scrawled “Yuppy = Bad” and “Fuck Yuppies,” on one of the building’s walls in blue writing, a riff on the market’s presence in an increasingly gentrified neighborhood.

Barre Tanguis, who opened the market last month with partner Will Donaldson, said several employees were inside the building when the vandals struck, about 2:30 a.m., evidenced by security footage taken from the building.

“We’re providing police with the security footage which will help with the investigation,” Tanguis said.

The vendors inside the market did not appear shaken and were open for business despite a growing media frenzy outside.

“We opened on time and we’re just going to stay open,” Tanguis said.

The refurbished market, which had stood vacant a decade since Hurricane Katrina and the federal levee collapses, was once home to a family-run business that sold po-boys and seafood. The revamped market reopened in April and now features more than a dozen vendors who sell a variety of prepared food items and produce including Korean fried chicken, Nigerian dishes, freshly baked goods and raw oysters, among others.

Workers outside the building Friday morning were attempting to chip off paint and clean what they could using a power washer. The majority of the paint and graffiti damage is expected to be removed from the building within the day.
