Marrero’s Café Hope (1101 Barataria Blvd., 504-756-4673) and crawfish spice giant Zatarain’s will be joining forces May 17 when they hold the second annual Local Food Fest at the West Bank nonprofit's outdoor garden.

The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will include dishes from more than 20 participating New Orleans restaurants and food vendors, including Coquette, Boucherie, St. James Cheese Company, Maurepas Foods, Angeline, Pizza Delicious, Felix's Oyster House, Steamboat Natchez and Humble Bagel, among others.  Craft beer and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

While entrance to the festival is free, proceeds from the sales of food and beverages will go towards Café Hope, which works with at-risk youth, training them in culinary arts while teaching valuable life skills during a 16-week program. Students are encouraged to cook with local and sustainable ingredients, sourcing produce from a host of local farms and community gardens.

“Local Food Fest is a time to celebrate the importance of locally and sustainably-produced food, while also spreading awareness of Café Hope’s mission,” said Luis Arocha, Cafe Hope's Executive Director.

Some of the menu items include roasted pork with Taleggio and pickled kale, a roasted eggplant salad with red onion, herbs and lemon feta and crawfish corn muffins.

Musical entertainment will include sets from Los Po-Boy-Citos, Michael Liuzza and Co. and Soul Creole. A car show – new to this year’s festival – includes a display of more than 50 cars from local auto clubs.

Children will be able to enjoy a petting zoo and face painting among other kid-friendly activities.
