Who doesn’t love free beer?

On Thursday, May 14, Whole Foods Market at Arabella Station (5600 Magazine St., 504-899-9119) holds a beer tasting focusing on IPAs in its breezeway beginning at 6:30 p.m. Chelsea Wilkerson, who manages the beverage program for the store says that participants of their regular wine tastings have been requesting a beer tasting.

There are many different substyles within the classification of the IPA, and this tasting aims to cover all of them. It includes the milder, maltier British India Pale Ale from Samuel Smith; the low alcohol-by-volume-style known as a “session” IPA, represented by New Belgium Brewing’s Slow Ride; a classic West Coast IPA from Lagunitas; Founders Centennial IPA; a double, or imperial, IPA called West Coast IPA from Green Flash; and Sierra Nevada’s Hop Hunter, which uses hops that are steam-distilled in the hop fields to hold on to the fresh, “wet” hop flavor and aroma.

On Friday, May 15, Brady’s Wine Warehouse (1029 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd, Ste C, 504-662-1488) beer guru Patrick Hunter will showcase a variety of styles and American breweries at Brady’s weekly beer tasting.

“Usually I pick five or six beers that are new, interesting or just something I think people should try, but for ACBW [American Craft Beer Week] we're going to do it bigger," Hunter says. "I thought I would do 12 beers, obviously all American craft, that represent a variety of popular styles.”

The dozen beers that will be available for sampling are Evil Twin Nomaderweiss, Off Color Troublesome and Destihl Flanders Red sour beers; lighter, crisp ales such as Parish Canebrake and Stoudts Pils; Belgian styles as interpreted by American breweries such as Prairie Standard and Clown Shoes Tramp Stamp; Parish Envie, Clown Shoes Galactica, and Finch's Hardcore Chimera will represent the hoppy end of the spectrum; and dark beers include Founders Breakfast Stout and Evil Twin Imperial Biscotti Break.

The tasting runs from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
