New Orleans Public Library (NOPL) hours will increase in 2016, NOPL Executive Director Charles Brown announced today.

In May, Orleans Parish voters overwhelmingly approved a 25-year, 2.5 mill tax to support the New Orleans Public Library (NOPL), which library officials estimated would add $8.25 million per year to the library budget. That money is in addition to an existing 3.14 mill tax, which is set to expire in 2021. In his pitch for the millage, Brown said the additional funds would allow for expanded hours and six- or seven-day operation of all branches.

Beginning Jan. 3, 2016, all NOPL libraries will be open Monday through Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., as well as Friday and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

SIx libraries will open on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the Main Library, the Sunday branches will be:

• Algiers

• East New Orleans

• Milton H. Latter

• Norman Mayer/Gentilly

• Robert E. Smith/Lakeview
