The Krewe of Kolossos hosts its fourth annual Fourth of July boat parade on Bayou St. John. The flotilla officially launches at 5 p.m. Saturday and boats will travel back and forth from the bridges at Dumaine and Moss streets.

Organizer Katrina Brees estimates 100 boats will participate, as well as krewe members and revelers along the banks.

"Most of the enjoyment happens around the Dumaine Street bridge," Brees says. "People just sort of float around, almost like tailgating with your boat.”

Costumes are encouraged and people can join the flotilla. People who don't own a boat can find a number of boat rental outfits on the Kollossos web page. Allowed boats include those with small electric motors, kayaks, canoes and “homemade designs” that are low enough to pass under the bridges. Gas motors are not allowed.

Brees also stresses the importance of being responsible while still having a good time. “Being respectful to the environment is important to us,” she says. “We don’t want people coming out and leaving a bunch of trash, so it’s about being responsible for all your possessions. Leave no trace.”

The Kolossos website event page says, “Life vests and sobriety are a magic equation for safety. Driving a boat while intoxicated can land you in jail for drunk driving.”

The Kollossos page also notes glitter and “cheap feather boas,” among other costume items, are banned for their litter production potential. “[Boas] shed like crazy,” it says.
