Each week, the New Orleans Exercist brings you news and events for active living in the Big Easy. Fall is finally in the air, and we’re digging out the long sleeves for our morning workouts. Grab the lederhosen and the Bavarian barmaid costume while you’re in the back of the closet, because New Orleans’ Oktoberfest kicks off this weekend with a 5K race. Plus, HigherPower’s wine ride returns. It’s free — just buy your own drinks (you were going to do that on Friday anyway).

- Nathalie Croix of Shanti Yoga Shala leads Vino and Vinyasa, an after-work yoga class and wine happy hour, at the House of Blues (225 Decatur St., 504-310-4999; on Wednesday (Oct. 7). It’s free for Foundation members and $5 for guests. Email to RSVP.

- HigherPower’s wine ride is back for the fall on Friday (Oct. 9). The 10-mile casual bike ride starts at the gym (514 City Park Ave., (504) 302-7497; at 6 p.m. and stops at Brady’s Wine Warehouse and Pearl Wine Co. before heading back. All you need is your bike, a helmet, a lock and money for wine.

- Oktoberfest NOLA in Kenner: a season of temperance and heart-healthy German sausages. But it does have a 5K run/walk on Saturday (Oct. 10), and sauerkraut is great for you. Registration is $30 and includes two free beers on race day, plus free admission all three weekends of the festival. Daily admission is $6, so if you’re going every weekend you could slow-walk the 5K and still come out ahead.

- If you’re not driving to Kenner, consider taking a weekend trip under your own power: Bike MS: Dat’s How We Roll is a two-day, 150-mile round trip bike ride from Hammond to McComb, Mississippi that benefits people living with multiple sclerosis. Late registration is $50, and riders commit to raising at least $275 for charity. The trip departs from Southeastern Louisiana University (500 Western Ave., Hammond) on Saturday morning.
