Each week, the New Orleans Exercist brings you news and events for active living in the Big Easy. Part Color Run, part children’s birthday party, Bubble Run is a 3-mile event for people who don’t take these things too seriously. Also this weekend: the Freret Street 5K, the Northshore Health & Fitness Expo, the first-ever Bike the Big Easy citywide ride, free hoop dancing and free CPR training, just in case.

- CPR is great skill to have, especially if you spend a lot of time at the gym or the pool. The American Heart Association offers free hands-only CPR training at Dillard University (2601 Gentilly Blvd.) at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. Hands-only is an updated resuscitation technique with no mouth-to-mouth breathing and a groovy disco soundtrack: the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive,” which happens to have an ideal 100-beats-per-minute tempo (How did you know, Bee Gees? How did you know?). Register online.

- If you’re curious about hooping (dat core strength!) but hesitant to embarrass yourself in your own front yard, try a free hoop dance demo class at the Broadmoor Arts & Wellness Center (3900 Gen. Taylor St.) at 6 p.m. Wednesday. If you go totally loopy for it, there's six more weeks of classes for $60.

- NOLA Social Ride meets up at the New Orleans Museum of Art (1 Collins Diboll Circle) at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday for an 18-mile fitness ride and dinner at El Gato Negro.

- The Junior League of New Orleans hosts the Freret Street 5K on Saturday, Oct. 17. The route stretches from Bloomin’ Deals (4645 Freret St.) through the Tulane campus, and the post-race party offers beer, wine, pizza, froyo and more. All runners have a chance to win raffle items from local businesses. Registration is $30, or $25 each if you can convince three friends to be on your team.

  • Roads close on Saturday morning, Oct. 17, for the inaugural citywide Bike the Big Easy ride.
- Just say no to matching beach cruisers and tour New Orleans like a local during Bike the Big Easy, a citywide bike ride sponsored by BikeEasy and Entergy at 7 a.m. Saturday. The 20-mile route begins at Champions Square and tours the CBD, French Quarter, Uptown and Midcity. Ambitious riders can add an additional 20 miles around City Park, Gentilly and the lakefront. Roads will close, so plan ahead if you need to drive somewhere Saturday morning. Registration is $60, but read the fine print first: the ride has detailed rules for bags, helmets and children.

- New Orleans’ tight-knit acro-yoga community is hanging out at City Park on Saturday afternoon for the AcroNola Festival. Show up for beginner and intermediate classes by donation.

- Meanwhile, in Slidell: the Northshore Health & Fitness Expo and associated Rock the Road race happens Saturday at Northshore Harbor Center (100 Harbor Center Blvd., Slidell, 985-781-3650; There’s 10K, 5K and one-mile distances, followed by a daylong wellness expo including a fitness competition, a blood drive and Halloween activities for kids. Registration is $40 for the 10K and $35 for the 5K; both races are qualifiers for the Crescent City Classic.

- Qualifying for the CCC is cool and all, but what if running could be more relaxing? Like… a bubble bath? Bubble Run New Orleans is a real thing at Zephyr Field (6000 Airline Drive, Metairie) on Sunday, Oct. 18 where runners in white clothes paddle through piles of colorful suds on their way to a bubble dance party. (A quote from the info packet: “The foam will be anywhere from 4’-7’ deep …. Bogs are ONE-WAY traffic only.” You were warned.) Registration is $20 through Wednesday or $50 after.

Next week, the Exercist takes a quick break. Cheat day, y’all.
