Louisiana's global pop outfit Givers returns next month with New Kingdom, its first album since 2011's In Light, via Glassnote Records. The band premiered the album's first single, "Sleeper Hold," this week — the song features spoken word from Dr. John, who was brought in to flesh out the band's vision of the song. "We knew it had to be him," singer and guitarist Taylor Guarisco told Vulture. "He represents the bridge and battle between the old world and new world, which is where the song's theme was taking us." Listen to the song below:
West Bank-raised tri-coastal rapper Chase N. Cashe is a rare rapper who raps on his own production work. He timed the release of his latest mixtape The Heir Up There 2 with the New Orleans Pelicans opening season on Oct. 27. He reps New Orleans throughout and backs up his prolific, soul-and-funk production work with his boastful, playful raps, whether getting back rubs from the boss' daughter or waking up on private jets on the way to other private jets. As one of the artists to watch in Gambit's 2015 Music Issue, the rapper said he's reaching for a more vibe-filled "visual, colorful sound" on The Heir Up There 2. "I'm just about to enter a zone, and the music is going to speak for itself," he said. "Keepin' It Real" features work from Hit-Boy, his longtime collaborator and fellow Surf Club member. Stream below or download the mixtape via DatPiff. New Orleans rock 'n' roll trio Bantam Foxes released its latest EP, the four-song Loser, as it took the stage today at the 2015 Voodoo Music + Arts Experience. It's the band's second EP released this year, following April's energetic, electric Give Us a Raise. Sam and Collin McCabe continue their big blasts of guitar-and-bass interplay, going full fuzz- and glitter-covered glam. It ends with a crashing acoustic guitar- and organ-powered downer and a wild guitar solo. Stream "Secondhand Smoke" below and stream the EP here. Instrumental electronic maestro AF THE NAYSAYER (another 2015 Gambit Music Issue alum) teases the release of his next EP, Armor Wing Battle Unit, with "R-96," featuring soft-voiced Japanese singer Shizuku Kawahara above a bed of dreamy, down-tempo, future-funky R&B:
Louisiana's Brass Bed premiered the B-side of its killer psychedelic single "I Am Just a Whisper" — a cover of Flamin' Groovies' take on "Sometimes," the swamp pop classic from Gene Thomas. Here the band slathers it in reverb for a scuzz-covered and swirling rock 'n' roll daydream.Mystikal's Halloween-timed single "Monsta" — shouting out lions, tigers, bears, crawfish and hippos and backed by spooky loops, a "Thriller" sample and rappers Lil Hood and Y. Luck — now has a video. The rapper turns off breaking news of zombie attacks only to find himself in the middle of a monster-filled horror flick. Watch it below:
