Meauxbar chef Kristen Essig will be the executive chef at Cavan (3607 Magazine St.), a restaurant opening in the Garden District next spring.

The restaurant is the newest project from the LeBlanc + Smith restaurant group, which runs the French Quarter new American bistro Sylvain, Lower Garden District whiskey haven Barrel Proof and Meauxbar.

The restaurant will be “inspired by the flavors of the American coast” and will feature “salt and freshwater fish, fowl and other coastal ingredients,” including fried oysters, whole fish preparations and grilled meats, according to a release from the restaurant group.

“The cuisine at Cavan will celebrate the flavors of the nation’s coasts,” Essig says in the release. “We want our guests to feel comfortable and at home, so there will be a familiarity with our food, but we’ll add a few surprises that elevate the ingredients and flavors.”

Essig took over the kitchen when Meauxbar re-opened in 2014 after cooking at Ste. Marie in the CBD, which the group shuttered earlier that year.

Sommelier Isaiah Estell, who currently oversees the wine program at Sylvain, will direct the cocktail and wine program at Cavan.

The restaurant occupies a 1880’s home, the Cockteron House, and will maintain some of its original features, including a grand spiral staircase leading to an upstairs bar and dining areas. Cavan will feature private dining spaces, outdoor seating in the home’s courtyard and a front porch.

“I’ve had family in this neighborhood for generations and my wife and I are currently raising our sons here, so I want very much to be a part of the restaurant community in this area,” said Robert LeBlanc, who co-owns the restaurant group.
