Each week, the New Orleans Exercist brings you news and events for active living in the Big Easy. Winter is coming, so now might be a great time to try surfing. I’m not kidding, but Hike It Baby is — they organize free hikes for people with little kids. And if you’ve been looking for an excuse to try out the New Orleans Boulder Lounge, Tuesday’s charity climb could be just the ticket.

- Get active in your community at New Orleans Boulder Lounge (1746 Tchoupitoulas St., 504-510-2990; www.climbnobl.com) tomorrow (Nov. 17) and climb by donation from noon to 10 p.m. In lieu of the usual $15 day pass, donations support Arc of Greater New OrleansVintage Garden Farm, an urban farm that employs people with disabilities. (You can also donate directly to the farm’s GoFundMe page.)

- The sun just keeps going down earlier, which is why this free sunset rooftop barre class is at 4:30 p.m. tomorrow, weather permitting.

- Where do you go to meet cool surfer babes in south Louisiana? Not a trick question: Texas-based boutique fitness studio City Surf (5924 Magazine St.; www.citysurffitness.com) opens its New Orleans location on Thursday (Nov. 19). City Surf workouts — cardio, strength training, circuits, yoga and more — are performed atop wiggly floor-mounted surfboards. A drop-in class costs $22. (Bonus: read Forbes’ interview with the founders.)

- The local chapter of Hike It Baby hosts free weekly trail walks for parents and caregivers of young children. The family-friendly hikes welcome people new to fitness and/or parenting and promise not to leave you behind if you have to stop for a tantrum or a snack. Check their Facebook page for upcoming local walks and the national organization’s blog for lots of baby-friendly camping wisdom. These people know their baby carriers.

- Check into the Fall Into Better Health Open House at the New Orleans Healing Center (2372 St. Claude Ave., 504-940-1130; www.neworleanshealingcenter.com) on Saturday (Nov. 21) afternoon. Exhibitors include Downtown Fitness, Magnolia Physical Therapy, Wild Lotus Yoga, Bywater Chiropractic and representatives from HealthCare.gov.

- ’Tis the season of guilt-ridden holiday indulgences and equally guilt-ridden holiday fitness initiatives. If money on the line tends to focus your mind, you can take the $100 buy-in to Premier Fitness’ Maintain Don’t Gain Holiday Challenge. Win cash if you lose the most weight, get $50 back if you maintain your starting weight or lose it all if you gain. The contest kicks off next Monday (Nov. 23) and details are on the Facebook page.
