Krewe du Vieux meets Krewe du Bernie? — and your chance to download this year's Le Monde de Merde

One side effect of a compressed Mardi Gras season seems to be everything happening at once — and that surely will be the case in the Faubourg Marigny Jan. 23, when the raunchy satirists of Krewe du Vieux roll through the streets just hours after a planned rally and march for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders starts in Washington Square Park.

Organizer Lawrence Dunn says he's applied for the proper permits with the city, and neither he nor city officials saw any problem or conflict with Krewe du Vieux.

"They said it should be fine. It's at noon, and it's just a one-hour march, and we're not bringing any floats or anything," Dunn told Gambit, describing the "March for Bernie" as a "one-hour loop-de-loop down Decatur [Street]." Organizers plan to go across Canal Street, turn on Common Street and go back to the Marigny through the French Quarter via Burgundy Street.

It's one of many "March for Bernie" events set for that day across the U.S., as the first Democratic Party primary caucus will be held Feb. 1.

Will "Bernie" be a target for Krewe du Vieux this year? This year's theme is "Krewe du Vieuxxx Rated XXX," and leading the parade will be grand marshal and seemingly ubiquitous New Orleanian Big Freedia.

"If we weren’t on the verge of World War III, all the XXX shit going on all over the planet might actually be funny," says the krewe's website in a statement. In a long list of pokes at presidential candidates, KdV salutes Sanders, saying he "distinguished himself as the only gun-rights-apologist flaming liberal in history."

The krewe staggers off early this year — 6 p.m. — on a route that will take it through the Marigny, French Quarter and CBD before ending at the post-parade ball at the Civic Theater, where George Porter and the Runnin' Pardners will entertain with Walter "Wolfman" Washington. Tickets are $40. And for more fun — and a preview of the various subkrewes and their themes — download the krewe's annual newsletter, Le Monde de Merde. (Don't pay too much attention to the map there — krewe members say it's changed a bit since Le Monde de Merde went to press.)
