Six places to pick up (or fix up) your costume before Mardi Gras

Costume stores are open year-round, because New Orleanians always need costumes, but Mardi Gras calls for something special. Here’s a quick guide to pop-up sales and workshops from now through Lundi Gras, whether your level of craftiness is “preparing an .stl file for 3D printing” or “do you take Square?”:

It's a Marathon, Not a Sprint

This brunch workshop for DIY costumers with a crafty and/or geeky bent offers sewing machines, a laser cutter, 3D printers and all-important free mimosas. Remember: marathon. Not sprint.

Costume Extravaganza
Costumers can bring costume supply items to donate or exchange at NOLA TimeBank's free swap. There are also hot glue guns, a sewing machine, king cake and refreshments.

Hollywood Thrift
Vintage lovers are so passionate about these film-set clearance sales that $54 VIP tickets are already sold out. (You can still snag early bird access for $27.) There’s no telling what you’ll find — past discoveries have included everything from marching band uniforms to chest waders. Proceeds benefit kids' costuming nonprofit ricRACK.

The NOLA Project Sunday Sidewalk Sale
The local theater company is cleaning out the closet and selling costumes, wigs, props and more. We’ll take one of everything from Marie Antoinette, s’il vous plait.

NOLA Designer Costume Bazaar
It comes a little late for costumers with multiple pre-Gras engagements this year, but Threadhead Cultural Foundation’s annual costume sale is the big one for local designers. Drop into the New Orleans Healing Center for a wealth of handmade costumes, hats, masks and accessories.

French Market Mask Market
Sometimes your face needs a costume all to itself. Suit up for the bal masque at the French Market’s last-stop-before-Mardi-Gras mask weekend, which attracts maskmakers from all over.
