Spotlight, director Tom McCarthy's behind-the-scenes story of The Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-wining 2001 investigation of pedophile priests and cover-up by the Catholic Church, won Best Picture at the 88th annual Academy Awards last night. Spotlight also won Best Original Screenplay (read our review of Spotlight here). Leonardo DiCaprio finally won Best Actor for The Revenant in his sixth career nomination, and Brie Larson won Best Actress for Room. Alejandro G. Inarritu won Best Direction for The Revenant, becoming only the third director to win that honor two years in a row. The Best Foreign Language Film Oscar went to Son of Saul. In our favorite award of the night, 87-year-old composer Ennio Morricone won the first Oscar of his illustrious career for The Hateful Eight. (Morricone did receive a lIfetime achievement award from the Academy in 2007.) See the full list of nominees and winners here.
