  • Mammoth Espresso is a new specialty coffeeshop in the Warehouse District.

Mammoth Espresso opens Thursday, March 24 at 821 Baronne St. The shop offers specialty coffees using Michigan roaster Madcap coffee, 15 types of tea and and a small menu of baked goods and croissant sandwiches.

Jonathan Riethmaier moved to the city two years ago to open the shop. He and his wife are originally from Arkansas and chose New Orleans because of its culinary richness and coffee history, Riethmaier says.

Riethmaier started working in the coffee industry on the marketing and public relations side a little more than 10 years ago in Atlanta. Later, in Washington D.C. he became interested in the specialty coffee world, and worked as a barista and organized latte art competitions with the group DMV Coffee. He is a co-founder of the local group New Orleans Barista Social Club, which holds latte art competitions and posts job vacancies at local specialty coffee houses.

Mammoth uses Seraphim brewing system, which brews individual cups to order in a fashion similar to pour-over coffee in three minutes. The staff also pay close attention to teas, steeping different teas at appropriate temperatures and times, Riethmaier says.

Mammoth Espresso is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.
