Michael Gulotta of MoPho (514 City Park Ave., 504-482-6845) has been named a Best New Chef by Food & Wine magazine. The group of eleven chefs were announced Monday morning on the publication’s website.

Food & Wine announces the yearly winners every spring and the 2016 class will be featured in the magazine’s July print issue as well as honored at the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen on June 17.

Gulotta opened his Vietnamese-inspired restaurant MoPho in 2014 after leaving Restaurant August, where he worked as the executive chef. At his Mid-City restaurant, Gulotta fused his fine-dining background with his love for Southeast Asian cuisine and ingredients, turning out plates such as red pepper jelly claims braised in white wine and coconut and served with beignets.

Earlier this year Gulotta took over the kitchen at Tulane Avenue cocktail bar Treo with the Italian pop-up concept Tana, cooking a small menu of Italian dishes inspired by his Sicilian heritage.

Gulotta and his brother Jeff Gulotta and friend Jeffrey Bybee run the small restaurant group which also includes the pub food pop-up Rum and The Lash, inside Finn McCool’s Irish Pub.

Past Best New Chefs included Daniel Boulud, Thomas Keller, April Bloomfield, Nancy Silverton, Tom Colicchio, Nobu Matsuhisa, Michael Symon, Stephanie Izard, Andrew Carmellini, and David Chang.
