Brewsday Tuesday: New local beers for Spring

Spring has sprung in New Orleans, and this year that means the arrival not only of buck moth caterpillars but several new beers.

The NOLA Brewing Company-Oskar Blues Brewery collaboration, The Wolf and the Lamb imperial pilsner, celebrates Oskar Blues’ first anniversary in Louisiana and is available in cans. The can design was created by New Orleans artist J. Pierre and depicts local musicians in front of shotgun houses.

Lazy Magnolia Brewery, located in Kiln, Mississippi, released a special edition beer called Fleur de Wheat, an American-style wheat beer brewed with Sorachi Ace hops, chamomile flowers and lemon peel. There are lemon notes from the Sorachi Ace hops, and they combine with lemon peel for a refreshing citrus kick, while the chamomile flowers add an earthy floral flavor.

Great Raft Brewing of Shreveport added a new beer to its stable of seasonal beers available in 22-ounce bombers. The new spring seasonal, Near and Far, was inspired in part by the brewery’s collaboration with chef Brian Landry of Borgne for the first volume of its  Provisions & Traditions series collaboration with the John Besh Foundation last year. It’s an American-style Kolsch beer with strong hop character courtesy of one pound of Nelson Sauvin and Amarillo hops per barrel.

Great Raft also released Come What Mayhaw, its first bacteria-fermented sour beer aged in pinot noir barrels and the state’s first foudre, a giant wooden barrel, with mayhaw berries.

Baton Rouge's Tin Roof Brewing Company will release a new seasonal in coming weeks called Rusted Rye IPA, which adds spicy rye grain to the mash. It works with Simcoe, Centennial, Falconer's Flight and Mosaic hops to create a black pepper, citrus and pine flavor combination.

In a press release, Head Brewer Alex Daigrepont noted he uses music as an inspiration for many of his beers, and the Tin Roof Rusted Rye was inspired by a line in the B-52’s hit song, “Love Shack.”
