Restaurant news for Guy’s Po-Boys, MoPho, Kenton’s

Mid-City restaurant MoPho (524 City Park Ave., 504-482-6845) hosts a whole hog roast and book-release party for local food writer Rien Fertel at 3 p.m. May 22. The event celebrates Fertel’s book The One True Barbecue: Fire, Smoke, and the Pitmasters Who Cook the Whole Hog, which examines the Southern tradition of whole-hog barbecue.

Fertel and photographer Denny Culbert will read from the book and sign copies. Tickets ($49) include a copy of the book, a plate of barbecue with sides from chef Michael Gulotta, wine, beer and a raffle entry to win one of two prints from Culbert.

After suffering heavy damage when a pick-up truck plowed into the building  Dec. 21, 2015, Guy’s Po-Boys (5259 Magazine St., 504-891-5025) is open again.

Police say a suspected drunk driver blew a stop sign and collided with a truck which careened through the front portion of the restaurant. No one was seriously injured in the accident, but the shop’s owners had to undertake major renovations. 

The Kentucky Derby is May 7 and Uptown bourbon and oyster hub Kenton’s (5757 Magazine St., 504-891-1177) is throwing a Derby Day party with cocktails and barbecue on race day. The restaurant will serve derby cocktails including Buffalo Trace mint juleps and brown derbies from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. In addition to a selection of barbecued ribs, brisket and pulled pork, snacks include deviled eggs, crispy grits with country ham and fried oysters.
