Two second lines this weekend:
Saturday debut of Nuthin But Fun SAPC and
Sunday's Original Big Seven Mother's Day Second Line

Nuthin But Fun President Tyrone “Tuffy’ Nelson is a staple on the second line scene. Widely recognized as one of the best dancers, quick with a smile and a positive encouragement for any and everybody. This Saturday marks the debut of his own club’s first parade and it promises to live up to its name: nuthin but fun.

“I’ve always wanted my own club,"Nelson said. "Its always been inside of me. But we’re gonna do it traditional. We gonna have second line songs, not that ‘radio.'"

‘Radio’ is what second liners refer to when bands play covers of contemporary songs heard. Radio is somewhat of a dig towards bands that don’t have a strong foundation in traditional New Orleans music. NBF’s parade will definitely be unique in that regard. Tuffy has put together his own dream team band he refers to at the "Andrew’s Family Band" which consists of members and friends of the famed Andrews family who hail from Treme or the Sixth Ward, the area where Tuffy grew up. Playing tomorrow will be tuba players Mike Brooks from Sons of Jazz and Desmond Provost from the New Breed Brass Bands; trumpeter Lil Glenn Andrews, leader from the Baby Boyz Brass Band; Terence "TBell" Andrews on bass drum, snare drummer Glen "Budda" Finister Andrews from TBC Brass Band; trumpeters Chad Honore and Derrick "Khabukey" Shezbi from Rebirth Brass Band; saxophonist John "Prince" Gilbert and trombonist Tyrus Chapman from the Hot 8 Brass Band, Rayvon "Peanut" Andrews from New Birth Brass Band and Corey "Bo Money" Henry, former leader of the Lil Rascals now playing with Galactic. All these musicians have grown up together, in and around the Sixth Ward, and are all regarded as top musicians in the New Orleans music scene. Each one of them is exemplary in their own right. They all know how to build on each other’s riffs, weave solos throughout the songs, and call to switch tempo and songs. To watch these musicians, all from different bands, come together to play some of the most electrifying without benefit of any rehearsal is a real treat.

NBF has over 20 members, both men and women. This’’ parade colors are green and burgundy. They are inviting the public to wear their colors to the parade to show support and enjoy the club’s maiden voyage on the second line scene.
