About a half-century before TV's Mad Men there was a movie called The Apartment that similarly depicted a unique period of cultural transition as it occurred in the early 1960s, particularly — or perhaps, first — in New York City. The Manhattan of director Billy Wilder's black-and-white masterpiece is one in which sexual mores have undergone a sudden and seismic shift, even as society's attitudes toward women remain stuck in the 19th century. (One result of that shift was the production of movies like this that depict sexual freedom for the very first time.) Such is the predicament suffered by Shirley MacLaine's Fran in The Apartment. The film, which also stars Jack Lemmon and Fred MacMurray, was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won five including Best Picture. There are few films we'd rather see one more time on the big screen.

The Apartment screens on Sunday, May 15 and Wednesday, May 18 at 10 a.m. Tickets and more info here.
