Melt to open in Mid-City in early June

When word spread last spring that a new restaurant specializing in grilled cheese sandwiches would be opening in Mid-City, the news sounded familiar. After all,  The Big Cheezy, which serves a long list of creative spins on the classic sandwich, had just opened around the corner, near the intersection of S. Broad Street and Tulane Avenue. 

But a year later, as Melt (2549 Banks St.), the new restaurant from Barcadia partner Miles Tully Jr., readies to open, it’s clear much more than the childhood staple is at play.

The two-story building underwent an impressive renovation. The spot's brick facade is painted robin’s egg blue, and inside the roughly 1,700-square-foot downstairs dining space, a long wraparound granite bar faces an open kitchen. In the rear of the restaurant, there’s a shaded courtyard, which will be set up, a la Bacchanal, with casual patio furniture and plants.  An upstairs, rooftop deck will have enough space for 75 to 100 people.

Though not strictly focused on grilled cheese, the menu concept is centered around gourmet sandwiches, “similar to what you’d find at (Cochon) Butcher or St. James (Cheese Co.),” Tully says. There also is an assortment of cheese and charcuterie platters and wine. The kitchen will add a selection of small plates, and depending on the demand from the nearby medical complex, breakfast might be introduced.

“The amount of things we can do with the kitchen is huge,” Tully says. “You can have something fast and casual or you can grab some wine and cheese and take your time. If there’s a need for us to be open earlier, we will." 

Melt joins a group of restaurants scheduled to open in coming months on the Banks Street strip. Farmacy, a comfort food concept from a pair of Namese alums, is set to open in the old Dis & Dem burgers and sliders spot at 2540 Banks St. Skip Murray’s burger joint is moving across the street to a new location, and likely will open by fall.

Melt is set to open by mid or early June and will initially be open from 11 a.m. to midnight daily.
