The Kinks' Village Green Preservation Society and Arthur smiled through self-aware pop satirizing the status quo. New Orleans duo Ross Farbe and Ray Micarelli — in a bit of Ray Davies worship though synthetic, worn-out tape-deck pop — wash down their dark confessionals and exiled, lovesick pop vignettes with wobbly guitars and sugary riffs on Living Alone, their assured debut as Video Age.

The band's heartbreaks and claustrophobic, no-future warnings are buoyed by warm, toy machine synthesizers and bubbling bass. "Sick inside, all alone at night" is coughed out over what sounds like a Rick Springfield hit from another dimension ("Love Sick"), and on album opener "Throwing Knives," the band hangs its warning ("they're in the house, creeping, scream and shout, I've had enough") with a bright guitar and a perfectly fuzzy view of Kinks sunshine.

Living Alone is out now on Inflated Records. Stream it below. The band's album release show is 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20 at Siberia with Natural Blonde and Surveillance.
