Three things to look for at the LSU spring game Saturday

Posted By on Fri, Apr 4, 2014 at 10:01 AM

Saturday night in Tiger Stadium
  • LSU ATHLETICS
  • Saturday night in Tiger Stadium

LSU's spring football game is tomorrow at 1 pm in Tiger Stadium. Here are three things to watch for during the game.

Quarterbacks

Anthony Jennings vs Brandon Harris

Jennings

Jennings is coming into the spring game as the QB to beat out for the job. He has game experience, albeit only 1 full game in the Outback Bowl against Iowa and one series vs Arkansas where he led LSU to a 99 yard game winning drive. Technically, Anthony has only played in two more games than Harris has. On the flip side of that coin, he does have over a year's experience in Cam Cameron's offense. He's familiar with the playbook and knows all the calls. The question is can he utilize that knowledge of the offense and translate it onto the field consistently? The bowl game vs Iowa he did not show that at all as he struggled mightily against a very good Iowa defense. SEC defenses are typically much bigger, stronger and faster than those from the Big 10. Can Jennings use this spring practice and game to catapult him to keep the starting QB position?

At last, at last: The Governor's Wife to premiere on A&E Oct. 27

Posted By on Mon, Sep 23, 2013 at 3:42 PM

It's been delayed and delayed, but at last it's (almost) here: The Edwin and Trina Scott Edwards "reality" show The Governor's Wife will premiere on A&E Oct. 27, so mark your calendars, tell Siri to remind you, schedule a babysitter, whatever.

Let's hope the network — unlike Louisiana State University — has properly estimated the continuing appeal of Louisiana's former governor. (By the way, Trina Scott Edwards has exhibited some Facebook pique with The Advocate's tart editorial about the money-wasting Larry King-Edwin Edwards "fiasco.")

The TV show will no doubt be far more successful, and, from the look of it, less expensive. Here's the trailer.

ICYMI: Tyrann Mathieu could be this year's breakout NFL rookie

Posted By on Mon, Aug 12, 2013 at 5:30 PM

Likely lost in all the excitement over Sean Payton's kind-of-sort-of return to coaching the Saints (it's still preseason, after all) was the fact that former Louisiana State University cornerback Tyrann Mathieu has been wowing people left in right while in training camp with the Arizona Cardinals.

Y'all remember the Honey Badger, don't you? His rise as a viral video sensation (Honey Badger!) and fan-favorite with the Tigers to his trouble with the law and unceremonious dismissal from the team, all were covered with incredible zeal by local and national media.

Mathieu took off a year from football and, even though he's said he doesn't want people to call him the Honey Badger any more, it appears that he hasn't given up on the Honey Badger mentality. Had Mathieu not had his run-ins with the law or been dismissed from LSU, it's possible he would've been a top-10 draft pick. Instead, he fell to the third round where the Cardinals took him with the 69th overall pick (after 11 other cornerbacks had been drafted).

Now Mathieu is garnering attention for all the right reasons, notching a sack in his first preseason game and dazzling fans and coaches alike in practice. Regardless of his past transgressions (and really, smoking pot pales in comparison to what other LSU players have been accused of doing) I always rooted for Mathieu to succeed after the hellacious childhood he endured. Now it looks like he's put himself in a position to prosper and we couldn't be happier for him (unless, of course, the Saints drafted him. Then we'd be happier.)

Y@ Speak: Tricks and treats

Posted By on Mon, Nov 5, 2012 at 11:55 AM

This Halloween week, New Orleans Twitter was treated to a variety of treats: amusing dispatches from trick-or-treating and the Frenchmen Street experience, deep thoughts from Norman Robinson, and an apparently drunk or really, really excited person on Bobby Jindal's Twitter feed Friday night. But is someone playing a trick on us with this Sean Payton news? Also this week: Hurricane Sandy tweets, Steve Gleason's mohawk, and people get worked up about LSU/Bama game.

Honey Badger apparently can't do what he wants

Posted By on Fri, Aug 10, 2012 at 12:33 PM

Tyrann Mathieu, the New Orleans native that won the hearts of college football fans across the nation with is playmaking ability last season, is no longer playing football for LSU.

It's a pretty shocking announcement to those who have been more focused on the Olympics and the Saints preseason, but there were rumors that Mathieu was going to be disciplined in some way. Seeing as how LSU made the announcement on a Friday, they were probably hoping this story would slip under the radar and be forgotten over the weekend but it is nonetheless a huge loss for the Tigers going into the season.

No word yet on what exactly Mathieu did to get kicked off the team other than he violated team rules. In 2011, Mathieu missed playing time because of a drug violation.

We will miss you, Honey Badger.

Grand jury indicts teabagging suspect

Posted By on Thu, May 17, 2012 at 1:24 PM

An Orleans Parish grand jury today (May 17) indicted Alabama football fan Brian H. Downing — accused of putting his testicles on an unconscious LSU fan in a Krystal hamburger restaurant on Bourbon Street following the BCS Championship game Jan. 9 — on one count of sexual battery and one count of obscenity. A judge set Downing's bail at $50,000, but an arraignment date has not been set.

A video of the January incident hit YouTube immediately, and Downing was identified as the suspect. He surrendered to New Orleans police Jan. 19, and his bail was set at $10,000.

If convicted, Downing could face a maximum of 10 years in prison on the sexual battery charge and a fine of no less than $1,000 and no more than $2,500 and six months to three years in prison on the obscenity charge.

Maxim names LSU "sexiest college"

Posted By on Tue, Feb 14, 2012 at 2:20 PM

In its March 2012 issue, rohypnol-flavored men's magazine Maxim offered its list of the sexiest things in America.

Axe-scented scientists determined the sexiest band, the sexiest place of worship, the sexiest ice cream truck — and its choice for sexiest college went to Louisiana State University, a name that really fires up the loins of anyone who dare speak its name. According to Maxim:

Take a road trip down to Baton Rouge, where football is king, gumbo abounds, and the student bodies are magna cum hotties.

Ah, yes, the noted aphrodisiacs football and gumbo. Put it on your "must have" list in the bedroom this Valentine's Day.

Y@ Speak: Worst week ever edition

Posted By on Mon, Jan 16, 2012 at 12:39 PM

There's really no other way to say it: this week totally sucked. Bama defeated LSU in Monday night's BCS National Championships, which made the presence of thousands of crimson-clad drunks slurring "ROWLLL TODDD" all around New Orleans even more painful. Then there were shootings in nearly every New Orleans neighborhood (except for the "hospitality district," so good job, everyone!). Then the San Francisco 49ers narrowly beat the Saints, which ended the season — and the best excuse to get daytime drunk every weekend — for us. It was a bad week, but if you weren't murdered or teabagged while unconscious at the Bourbon Street Krystal Burger then consider yourself lucky.

Also, this week we're trying out this new thing called Storify to present Y@ Speak. It makes it way easier to retweet, reply to or follow the Twitter users featured in the roundup. Let us know if you dig it, or if we should scrap it. Hit the jump for the roundup.
