2006 Alonso Videla Malbec Reserva

Mendoza, Argentina / $14-$18 Retail

Malbec grapes for this wine were sourced from 40-year-old vines in the Andes foothills in Mendoza's Tupungato region. It is tank fermented and aged for 10 months in a mixture of French and American oak, followed by four months resting in the bottle. In the glass, the dark, medium-bodied wine appears like a silky, lush Bordeaux blend with fully ripened bright fruit aromas and layers of flavor, suggesting currants, black cherry, plum and hints of black spice. It is well-balanced with good acidity and firm, even tannins. Decant before serving and drink it with grilled meats, burgers, fowl and hard cheeses. Buy it at: Cork & Bottle, The Wine Seller, Dorignac's, Langenstein's-Metairie, Cellars of River Ridge and Acquistapace's Covington Super Market. Drink it at: Antoine's, Orleans Grapevine, Mandina's, Delachaise, Gallagher's Grill and Bistro de la Reine. — Brenda Maitland
