2007 Vitiano Rosso

Umbria, Italy / $10-$12 Retail

This stellar bargain is an approachable everyday wine. The winery is located 35 miles north of Rome in Umbria, a small region neighboring Tuscany that is primarily known for white wines. This red is made from equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and offers aromas of ripe black fruit, earth notes and hints of vanilla from aging in French oak. On the palate, there is more dark fruit with prune, black cherry, plum and currant flavors, even tannins, good acid and a lingering finish. Decant at least an hour before serving. Drink it with Italian sausages, veal, pasta dishes and firm cheeses. Buy it at: Whole Foods Markets, Dorignac's, Cost Plus Markets and Fresh Market in Mandeville. Drink it at: Domenica and Bacco. — Brenda Maitland
