2009 Il Fauno di Arcanum Rosso

Toscana, Italy

Retail $21

The Tenuta di Arceno estate lies at the heart of Tuscany's 3,000-year-old culture. The rise of Super Tuscans — wines not limited by the government's official classification system — has expanded the introduction of grapes beyond the indigenous sangiovese. On Arceno's 2,500-acre estate, an array of Bordeaux varietals have found a home, particularly cabernet Franc. This blend of 61 percent merlot, 20 percent cabernet sauvignon, 16 percent cabernet Franc, 2 percent sangiovese and 1 percent petit verdot is aged 12 months in 30 percent new French oak. In the glass, it offers savory herbal undertones and aromas of cedar, dried red fruit, ripe blackberry, spice, black pepper and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, taste dark cherry, cassis, plum, bittersweet chocolate, mineral notes and earthiness. Decant an hour before serving. Drink it with osso buco, spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, grilled or roasted game, beef and veal and hearty cheeses. Buy it at: Elio's Wine Warehouse and Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket. Drink it at: Cochon, Doris Metropolitan, Morton's Steakhouse, Royal Sonesta New Orleans, Mr. John's Steakhouse, The Italian Barrel, Marcello's Restaurant & Wine Bar, Amici's Ristorante & Bar and Nuvolari's.
