2012 Landmark Overlook Chardonnay

Retail $20-$25

Some chardonnay fans prefer buttery, creamy, oaky California styles, while others like more austere, crisp, minerally, un-oaked or neutral oak styles, which are more typically French. But there are alternatives that split the difference, like this wine, which has been included on Wine Spectator's annual Top 100 list six times in the past 17 years. It is a gently oaked blend of separately vinified grapes from 22 of California's finest vineyards in Sonoma, Monterey and Santa Barbara counties and the Pacific coast. In 1993, Landmark enlisted enologist Helen Turley to work on its chardonnay. The vintner now uses whole grape cluster pressing, ferments with native yeast strains and ages the wine in French oak. In the glass, it offers complex aromas of lemon grass, apple, toast and honeysuckle. On the palate, taste citrus, pear, white peach, melon and subtle oak spice. Drink it with grilled fish, sashimi, salads, rosemary roasted chicken and light pasta dishes. Buy it at: W.I.N.O. Shop, Acquistapace's Covington Supermarket and Saia's Super Meat Market. Drink it at: Irene's Cuisine, Antoine's Restaurant, Emeril's New Orleans, Nola, Emeril's Delmonico, Hyatt Regency New Orleans, Gordon Biersch, Crowne-Plaza New Orleans Airport, La Provence and Dakota Restaurant.
